P1 - The King Derby Suite

"King Derby" refers to Elias Hasket Derby (1739-1799) who was a maritime merchant and the first millionaire in the New World. He also was the son of Captain Richard Derby, who started the business that helped establish Salem as an important center of maritime trade in the late eighteenth century. King Derby continued his father’s successful business and the Derbys became the second wealthiest family in New England. Elias was also heavily involved in the revolution and was known for arming a militia of privateers. The title “King Derby” was given to Elias after his death, by famous Salem writer Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter.
